The Opportunity

Direct Reports:9: Director of the Excel Academy, Director of Operations, Director of Finance, Director of Care – Grand Manor, Director of Care – Balwin Villa, Director of Community Services, Director of Human Resources, Director of Strategic Alliances & Quality, and an Executive Assistant.
Location:On-site in Edmonton, Alberta

Mandate

The Excel Society is seeking a visionary, collaborative, and mission-inspired President & Chief Executive Officer to lead the organization into its next chapter. Reporting to the Board, the CEO will be the steward of the Society’s mission—championing its strategy, people, and purpose. A decisive and values-driven administrator, the CEO will oversee a dedicated leadership team while guiding the evolution of programs and services that make a meaningful difference in the lives of those served.

With the freedom to lead boldly and the responsibility to uphold excellence, the CEO will be entrusted to advance the organization’s legacy by:

  • Amplifying Excel’s presence and voice across Alberta
  • Elevating expectations and experiences for all clients and interested parties
  • Identifying and securing new funding opportunities
  • Leveraging financial strength and the strength of the balance sheet to explore new opportunities
  • Inspiring and empowering a passionate, long-standing team

Key Accountabilities

  • Exceptional Care: Foster a culture of excellence and innovation that ensures services remain client-centred and impactful.
  • Strategic Planning: Lead both annual and long-term planning that reflects Excel’s ambitions and community needs.
  • Operational Excellence: Uphold the highest standards of service by driving performance and accountability.
  • Executive Leadership: Build trust, morale, and momentum across the organization through engaged, authentic leadership.
  • Financial Oversight: Steward the organization’s financial health with discipline, transparency, and foresight.
  • Risk Management: Strengthen compliance and safeguard sustainability through robust risk frameworks.
  • Relationship building: Deepen collaboration and further strengthen partnerships with other service providers, government, funders, regulators, community organizations, and other interested parties.
  • Government Relations: Serve as a respected advocate and partner to government, ensuring policy alignment and support.
  • Board Governance: Work closely with the Board to uphold excellence in governance and strategic alignment.

Success in the first year will be determined by the candidate’s ability to:

  • Cultivate strong relationships with the team, Board, clients, and community partners
  • Recognize and harness the strengths of the team, fostering trust and effective delegation

Candidate Profile

The successful candidate will have the following:

Education:

  • An undergraduate degree in a related field
  • A master’s degree is welcomed

Experience:

  • A minimum of five years of senior leadership experience in a cross-functional, mission-driven organization
  • Background in healthcare or a related field is an asset
  • Demonstrated operational and business leadership
  • Experience managing infrastructure and assets
  • Prior experience reporting to a Board is beneficial
  • A track record of effective advocacy on behalf of staff and clients
