Board Director

STEM Collegiate Canada Society

Status: Open Location: Edmonton, AB

STEM Collegiate is looking for an engaged community and business leader to join our volunteer Board of Directors and help shape the next chapter of one of Alberta’s most innovative and high-performing public charter schools.

STEM Collegiate is an Edmonton public charter school for students in Grades 7–12, created to provide students with rigorous, applied STEM learning and stronger connections to post-secondary education, industry and future careers.

Who We’re Looking For

We are looking for a senior leader with previous board governance experience and a strong understanding of the role of a governing board – including strategic oversight, fiduciary responsibility, policy, accountability and the distinction between governance and operations.

Experience governing in a public-sector, education, nonprofit or other complex regulated environment would be particularly valuable.

We are also interested in candidates who bring experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Government relations, public affairs or public policy, ideally with knowledge of Alberta government and public-sector decision-making
  • Industry leadership, with strong connections across Edmonton’s business community and innovation ecosystem
  • Strategic partnerships and community relations, with an ability to build relationships that create opportunities for students and the school
  • Risk, legal or regulatory expertise, with an understanding of enterprise risk, compliance and regulatory obligations
  • Experience with organizational growth would be a strong asset

The ideal candidate will also be well connected in the community, enjoy opening doors and building partnerships, and believe strongly in connecting young people with the opportunities, people and industries that will shape their futures.

The Role

  • Provide strategic governance and oversight, helping set the overall direction of STEM Collegiate, steward its resources, oversee organizational leadership and ensure the school fulfills its responsibilities as an Alberta public charter school.
  • Ensure STEM Collegiate delivers on the goals of its approved Charter, including approving and monitoring the Education Plan and Annual Education Results Report, overseeing financial performance and accountability, and monitoring progress against student and school outcomes.
  • Contribute to strong stakeholder and community relationships and help position the school for continued growth.
  • Bring sound judgment, an independent perspective and a willingness to ask good questions and contribute at a strategic level.

Time Commitment

The Board meets 10 times per year, generally once per month, for approximately 1.5 hours per meeting. Directors are expected to review materials in advance and may also participate in committee work or other Board priorities from time to time.

Directors serve a three-year term.

This is a volunteer position and a great opportunity for someone who wants to contribute their experience and leadership in a meaningful way while helping shape the future of STEM education in Alberta.

Why STEM Collegiate?

STEM Collegiate is still a relatively young organization with an ambitious vision. As demand grows, the Board has an important role to play in strengthening relationships with government, industry, post-secondary institutions and the community and ensuring the school has the partnerships and resources it needs for its next stage of growth.
