Chief Executive Officer
Edmonton Screen Industries Office
Status: Open Location: Edmonton, AB
The Organization
The Edmonton Screen Industries Office (“ESIO”) was established in 2017 following extensive industry stakeholder consultations, out of which came the decision to replace the former Film Commission with a new non-profit society governed by an independent board of business and community leaders. The organization is dedicated to the growth and sustainability of Edmonton screen media inclusive of film, television and interactive digital media.
ESIO’s purpose is “to be a daring partner that champions creativity, powers the success of our screen industries, and drives pride in a radiant city.” We act as a catalyst to cultivate, activate and strengthen the screen industries sector in the Edmonton region and support opportunities for creative enterprises to develop, grow and succeed. Production in Edmonton’s screen industries contributes over $23 million to our economy and the ESIO’s bold aspiration is to grow that to $300 million.
The organization is governed by a Board of Directors who oversees and provides overall strategic direction for the organization in the pursuit of its purpose. Since its inception, the ESIO has invested in screen projects, established a range of successful programs to support the industry, built strong relationships with its industry partners, and showcased and raised the profile of Edmonton’s screen industries in markets across Canada, in the US and in key international markets. All of this with the intention of building a stronger, more impactful and more resilient Edmonton screen media industry.
In 2022, the ESIO launched a new strategy designed to build on our experiences and understanding of the industry and shift our priorities to five key actions: developing a leading ESIO team, committing to and engaging with the screen industry community, promoting our unique industry to key markets around the world, collaborating with our industry partners, and investing in the necessary infrastructure, education and resources screen industries need to grow and succeed.
The ESIO’s annual operating costs are funded through the ongoing support of the City of Edmonton. The ESIO also manages a legacy fund – the Strategic Initiatives Fund – of $3.0 million which allows the ESIO to fund five key programs: the Elevation Program (supporting film/AV producers taking the next big step in their careers), the Underrepresented Initiatives Fund (providing opportunities for non-profit organizations to offer programs to increase representation in the screen industries), the Summit Push Program (allowing selected game producers to showcase their games on the international stage), the Trailhead Program (providing support for recent university graduates to continue their game development), and the Alberta Producer Accelerator Program (operated in conjunction with the provincial government and Calgary Economic Development). In 2023/24, $700,000 in support was committed from the Strategic Initiative Fund and plans are to invest roughly $1 million per year over the next three to four years.
