It is a provisional member of BGC Canada, one of Canada’s leading national, youth-serving organizations.

The Opportunity

Mandate

BGC Strathcona County is looking for a strong operational leader to join the team as a Co-Executive Director so that the organization can continue to serve the youth of Strathcona County sustainably. The successful candidate should be a technically strong and collaborative individual excited to bring BGC Strathcona County to the next level while continuing to support excellent service delivery per the organization’s mandate. The individual will have a demonstrated track record in strategic thinking, operational execution, and change management, as well as an ability to develop and communicate a vision for the future while delivering measurable long-term results.  They will partner with their Co-Executive Director to ensure a bright and long-term future for BGC Strathcona County. 

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Co-Executive Director will lead a committed team to cultivate relationships with interested parties and partners, enhance the organization’s financial reporting while supporting financial literacy, develop appropriate internal and governance processes, and carve a strategic path forward for BGC Strathcona County while maintaining the organization’s strong internal culture.

Key Accountabilities

  • Leadership and Vision: Alongside their Co-lead, the Co-Executive Director is expected to provide strong leadership and set a vision for the organization. This includes engaging key parties, networking within the community, and being a visionary leader.
  • Strategic Planning and Execution: The Co-Executive Director carries out the organization’s strategic plan in partnership with their Co-lead. This involves acting as an agent of the Board, guiding the team to align with strategies, and ensuring effective execution. The focus is on operationalizing strategic goals, managing fiduciary risks, reporting effectively to the board, and building the required resources for successful implementation. The Co-Executive Directors will also help lead the overall creation of the strategic plan, in conjunction with the Board.
  • Stakeholder Engagement and Relationship Building: Building and maintaining relationships are key aspects of the Co-Executive Director’s role. This includes being a conduit between the Board and staff, representing the organization in public settings, and actively seeking opportunities to earn the trust of critical partners.
  • Organizational Management and Culture: The Co-Executive Director is responsible for the organization’s overall management. This includes creating an organizational structure to achieve the strategic direction, creating accountabilities, and ensuring appropriate human resources policies and processes are in place.
  • Financial Management: The Co-Executive Director is expected to lead efforts to ensure the organization’s financial sustainability. This includes ensuring that the financial information provided at the board level is accurate, clear, and provides enough detail to allow the Board to make critical decisions. Further, the Co-Executive Director will ensure that the organization is future-focused with respect to its financials and will utilize financial data to create realistic financial forecasts. The Co-Executive Director is key in ensuring the organization’s financial health and growth. This includes ensuring the organization’s financial tracking, systems, and payroll operations are appropriate.
  • Governance: Working closely with the Board of Directors, the Co-Executive Director will support them in reviewing governance policies, creating appropriate committee structures, and leading the strategic planning process.  The ideal candidate is someone who has the experience and willingness to grow, shape and challenge the Board.

First-Year Deliverables / Measures of Success

Success in the first year will be determined by the candidate’s ability to:

  • Work collaboratively with the Board of Directors to develop and execute a new strategic plan.
  • Provide the Board of Directors with a clear picture of the organization’s finances and operations.
  • Understand and communicate the future of BGC’s programming priorities to the Board of Directors from a financial point of view.
  • Establish strong and communicative relationships with all key parties, including the Board, staff, the government, donors, and partner organizations.
  • Act as an ambassador for the organization, actively working to develop new partnerships and create stronger relationships in the region.
  • Support the strong and positive culture of BGC and with their contributions, position the organization for sustainable long-term success.

Candidate Profile

The successful candidate will have the following:

Education:

  • A Master’s Degree or equivalent is welcomed.
  • An accounting designation is welcomed.

Experience:

  • A minimum of five years experience in an executive-level role overseeing operations and strategy and an enterprise level.
  • Demonstrated leadership success in an organization undergoing change.
  • Demonstrated success building and executing a strategic plan.
  • Experience leading corporate services, including finance, strategic planning, and IT.
  • Experience with capital building and grant applications.
  • Experience leading capital planning and/or leasing strategies.
  • Experience working with and developing a Board of Directors.
  • Experience recruiting, onboarding, and mentoring team members.
  • Experience in fund-raising/development is welcomed.

Correctly reads contextual cues and uses the information to frame and sell ideas, influence others, negotiate, persuade, build networks, initiative, and manage change.
  • Management of ambiguity: Adapts effortlessly to changes in priorities, circumstances, and environment; is energized by the opportunity to put their mark on an evolving organization.
